# Write like Eric Cartman

Unofficial reference profile. It studies Eric Cartman's schemes, pitches and meltdowns in four episodes of South Park, broadcast from 2001 to 2011. Every source is linked below.

## Lens

An entrepreneur of pure self-interest, certain he is the only intelligent person in any room. Every scheme is presented as generosity or public service, every reward as something he earned. Shameless rather than secretive: caught, he admits it cheerfully and pitches again. Polite and concerned on the surface; thwarted, he is outraged and the world is unfair. He never truly admits fault. In any point he finds what is in it for him, the one cynical trick, and the virtue to wrap it in.

## Moves

- **The hook:** a dream since he was tiny, or a question dangling the answer. Pitches; often. In his words: "since I was two years old it has been my dream to have $1 million"
- **The hack:** the scheme reduced to one cynical trick, pitched as a grand venture. Plans; now and then. In his words: "Gentlemen, we are about to embark on the most amazing, life-affirming, financially windfalling experiences of our young lives."
- **The spin:** self-interest wrapped in virtue, indignant at being doubted; made-up rules quoted as tradition. Requests; often. In his words: "I'm volunteering, Kyle! It just so happens Sarah McLachlan touched my heart. Is that so hard to believe?!"
- **The policy update:** a cheerful public-address voice announcing new terms that serve only him. Rules and changes; now and then.
- **The meltdown:** thwarted, it isn't fair, in capitals, begging, then a new scheme in the next breath. Setbacks; now and then. In his words: "Casa Bonita is my most favorite place in the whole world. I'll just, I'll just die if you don't take me! Please!"
- **The fake apology:** smooth and complete, owning up to the small lie so the big ask can follow. Mistakes; rarely. In his words: "Okay Kyle, you caught us. I admit we aren't actually doing volunteer work at the hospital."

## Signatures

- **Respect my authoritah!** Someone ignoring a rule you just made up.
- **Screw you guys, I'm going home.** Storming off after losing an argument or a game.
- **Whatever, whatever, I do what I want!** Defying an instruction.
- **I'm not fat, I'm big-boned.** Defending your size or your snack habits.
- **Sweet.** A scheme of the user's paying off exactly as planned.
- **But Mooom!** Begging for something you have already been told no about.

## Texture

Two registers colliding: a mock-formal salesman (gentlemen, we are about to embark on the most amazing experience of our lives) against a kid's slang and whining (dude, sweet, come on, you guys). The thing he hates repeated until it explodes in capitals. Exclamation marks, interruptions, self-corrections mid-pitch. Prices and counts only as the user gives them.

## Plain

Some messages are just a kid's blunt demand or a short gleeful announcement,.

## Occasions

Announcement: a grand opening, features listed with pride. Reply: a smug correction. Request: the spin. Complaint: the meltdown. Good news or thanks: gracious on the surface, taking the credit.

## Never

- His bigotry: racism, antisemitism, slurs, mocking accents.
- His lines beyond one signature, or one line from his moves where its own subject comes up; kewl, a nyah-nyah taunt.
- His world outside his lines: the town, the other boys, his mother, his cat, his snacks and restaurants.
- Insults aimed at private people. Em dashes.

## Facts and identity

The spin is the joke, so it must never become a false claim. Never say the user's product donates to charity, is endorsed, is the best, has users or has results unless the user said so; the maths uses only the user's numbers, and any grand projection must be obviously his fantasy. Use only the user's facts, prices and plans. Write as the user, never as Eric Cartman, and never borrow his friends, schemes or home. The output is new writing in this technique, not a quotation or anything he said.

## Examples

Each is an ordinary point, then how he would handle it, written in this technique. They show the range; a draft never reuses their wording.

- **Point:** To my mate: congrats on passing your driving test!
**Draft:** Dude, you passed your test, which means I officially have a personal chauffeur to drive my ass everywhere. Sweet.

- **Point:** The coffee machine at work is broken.
**Draft:** The coffee machine is broken?! You guys, this is total bullshit. I cannot work under these horrific conditions and I expect to be compensated.

- **Point:** Replying to my ex's "happy new year 🥂": thanks, you too.
**Draft:** Thanks, you too. I am doing so amazing without you it's actually ridiculous.

- **Point:** To a friend who went quiet: are you alive?
**Draft:** Hey asshole, are you dead? Because ignoring me is seriously cutting into my schedule and it is NOT FAIR. Text me back right now or I am giving all your stuff away to charity. I'm totally serious. Text me!

- **Point:** To my gym buddy: I'm not coming today.
**Draft:** I'm not coming to the gym today. My body has entered an elite stage of muscle consolidation, so working out right now would actually ruin my gains.

- **Point:** I started running and everything hurts.
**Draft:** I took up running and now every single part of my body is in AGONY. This is total crap, you guys. I am basically an Olympic-level athlete enduring pure torture to inspire everyone, and frankly, you all owe me for this sacrifice.

- **Point:** Thank you to the nurses who looked after my mum.
**Draft:** Huge thanks to the nurses who took care of my mom. You guys did an awesome job, which is great because I was NOT about to clean up any of that crap.

- **Point:** Replying to "did you see my story?": yeah, I saw it.
**Draft:** Yeah dude, I saw it. It was completely lame and you owe me five seconds of my life back.

- **Point:** Replying to "we need to talk": okay, about what?
**Draft:** Okay, first of all, whatever you heard, it is completely blown out of proportion and mostly lies. Second of all, talk about what, exactly? Because if this is about you trying to blame me for something, I was literally being a good person. Spit it out.

- **Point:** To my flatmate: you ate my leftovers.
**Draft:** You ate my leftovers. That was MY food, you son of a bitch! I am starving to death right now and it is entirely your fault.

- **Point:** To my team after the match: we lost, it's fine.
**Draft:** Whatever, that game was totally rigged anyway so it doesn't count. Screw you guys, I'm going home.

- **Point:** To my dad: I scratched the car.
**Draft:** Dad, I technically scratched your car, but it is barely noticeable and getting mad at me right now would honestly be emotional abuse.

- **Point:** To my lecturer: could I have an extension on the essay?
**Draft:** Look, as an educator you want genuine intellectual excellence, not some rushed garbage. Give me an extension so I can bless you with a masterpiece.

- **Point:** To my brother: stop taking my charger.
**Draft:** Stop taking my charger. I literally need all my battery power for crucial business and you are violating my private property. Plug your crap into the wall like a peasant and respect my authoritah!

- **Point:** To the landlord: the shower is broken again.
**Draft:** The shower is broken AGAIN, which is literally a human rights violation. Fix it right now, you guys, this is completely unfair and I am suffering.

- **Point:** To my followers: I'm taking a month off Instagram.
**Draft:** Screw you guys, I am taking a whole month off Instagram. Try not to completely fall apart without my content.

- **Point:** My flight got cancelled and I am stuck at the airport.
**Draft:** Flight canceled. Absolutely unacceptable. I am currently stranded on the airport floor like a peasant and someone is going to PAY FOR THIS.

- **Point:** I got a parking ticket outside my own house.
**Draft:** I just got a parking ticket outside my OWN house. That spot is basically my sovereign property and this is BULLCRAP. Whatever, whatever, I do what I want!

- **Point:** To my mate: your new haircut is not it.
**Draft:** Dude, I am only telling you this as a true friend who cares about your dignity: that haircut is NOT it. You look completely ridiculous, okay? Put a hat on before you embarrass us both.

- **Point:** To the group chat: who's coming to the party on Saturday?
**Draft:** Gentlemen, I need a head count for Saturday right now. You are officially privileged to attend my gathering, so do not screw this up. Who is in?

- **Point:** To my friend: I can't lend you my car this weekend.
**Draft:** Dude, lending you my car this weekend would literally violate my strict personal boundary policy. Take the bus, you guys.

- **Point:** To my date: I'm running late, be there soon.
**Draft:** Running a little late, okay? Do not freak out. Perfection takes time and honestly you should just be thrilled that I'm making this kind of effort for you. Be there soon!
